Life tenets for Joy and Happiness
I’ll admit, I am not always the most positive person. Sometimes I want to rip my hair out or just sit in a corner binge watching Gilmore Girls. But my ideal state is one of positivity and joy. These are the life tenets that help me stay positive, and joyful:
Organization is the key to success
Studies have shown that clutter can lead to stress. Essentially clutter makes our brain think that we have work to do, and distracts us from anything else that we’d like to accomplish in our day. I know personally, when I get home and walk into a cluttered room, I instantly feel more tired from the day. On the contrary, when I come home and walk into a decluttered, well organized room, I feel energized and ready to take on the second half of my day.
I’m not saying it’s easy, by any means. Especially if you share your living space with a spouse, kids, or pets. I have all of the above, and it is a constant battle, but believe me when I tell you, it is a battle worth fighting!
Exercise and nutrition will change your life – Every Time
When I am eating right and exercising, tracking my weight and staying active, I stay positive. When I stop moving and eat crap, the depression starts. And once depression starts, it’s hard to tell what is real and what is not. Am I sad because my life is not going I want? Is life not going the way I want because I’m depressed? The circle turns and turns, and life passes on by.
The more you stay moving, even if it’s just walking 10,000 steps a day, the more your body will work with your mind to keep you positive.
Creating and crafting gives you control
Are you a crafter? Obsessed with Pinterest? I am a wanabe crafter who wants to be craft things, all the time. And I love the HGTV app and I see myself as someone who can create beautiful, practical things. But sometimes I don’t make the time to do it. Sometimes I’ll just hold on to supplies for years on end, without actually make anything.
But when I do make things, when I get creative, I get such a satisfying sense of control. Remember, “control what you can control”. There are so many things in this world that we can’t control, and I try to only make myself crazy about the things I can control.
Nature will bring you home
We are so plugged in to work, social media, YouTube, Netflix, that our minds are constantly processing information. According to Rob Asghar using our cell phones as much as we do is reducing our ability to day dream and take some time to look within ourselves link.

Taking some time in nature helps bring you back into yourself, and it helps to slow your racing mind. I try to take some time in nature each week, even if it’s only taking in the blue sky, or feeling the rain on my way to the car. As long as I’m acknowledging nature, letting it into my mind, I am feeling more positive and joyful.
There is nothing in the world more important than family
Whether you’ve got 13 kids, or 13 dogs, your family is the color that paints the canvas of your life. Taking the time to spend time, is so important. There have been stretches in my life when I only get to spend an hour with my kids and I make sure to drink in every second of that hour. Staring at their faces, listening to their voices, and holding them as much as I can.
Family trips, outings, movie nights, and cuddle sessions are the times in my life that make me smile the widest and really make me feel like I am living life right. Though, falling into the trap of dishes, laundry, work, and everything else life throws at us can make family time take a backseat. Keeping family at the front of the line takes work, and time, and makes all the difference in the world.
